This month we will hear from Orban. They appear to be going digital in a big way. But theyve broken with the brown panel scheme of the past.
As usual our luncheon will be at Sinbads. Sinbads is just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission Street. Please RSVP to Karen Prasek at Zacks: 408-324-0551 x126 as we've been running out of tables and chairs. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30.
The following meetings are currently scheduled:
JUNE 26TH- ROLAND DIGITAL EDITOR
JULY 31ST- BELDEN WIRE AND CABLE
AUG 28TH- ANDREW PRESENTATION
SEPT 25TH- COMMUNICATIONS CONCEPTS - Digital Satellite Technologies
All of the ATV licenses in the United States have been won by a man known only as Uncle Sid. He and members of a service organization known as the Piranha Club managed to muscle their way onto all of the available chairs. When asked if this was true, your correspondent was shown a down payment check in the amount of one hundred million dollars drawn on the Bank of Sid. When Uncle Sid was questioned as to whether he was related to Bud Grace, who draws the Ernie strip for the Examiner, he would only smile.
{Ed note ( no joke): Several of the sports who bid big bucks in the last spectrum auction have failed to come up with money for the required down payment.]
[Ed note note: Love that Ernie strip.]
I worked with Jim for 4 years and enjoyed his rather salty view of life. He would sometimes remind me a bit of W.C. Fields. He managed to stay calm and bring back the story under very trying circumstances. He was on the scene during the assassination attempt on Gerald Ford in Sacramento. He covered the Juan Corona murder trial. And reported the carnage at the ice cream store in a mall that had been demolished by a jet plane.
Jim had an ample figure. One time he was enlisted to ride on a circus elephant in a short parade near the Oakland Coliseum. His discomfiture came through so clearly on the tape he made that we were all crying with laughter when we played it back. Jim was that bit of spice that I find so lacking in today's broadcast journalism.
