BABES/SBE LUNCHEON ON WEDNESDAY
Oct 28TH As usual our luncheon will be at Sinbad's. Sinbad's is just south of the
Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission Street. Please
RSVP to Karen Prasek at Zack's: 408-324-0551 x126 as we've been running out of
tables and chairs. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30.
This month our program will feature the Larry Bloomfeld
from Sunup Systems. His firm has tackled the problem of multiple traffic systems
under one roof with a single point of control.
There are three Harris transmitters and one Larcan. There are four different ATSC encoders. Mitsubishi, NDS, GI, and Lucent. We have the GI and actually have a decoder. Several writers have done the math on what happens when you try and bump standard definition 4:3 up to 1080I 16:9. They're right on the money. It inhales most profoundly. (i.e. sucks big time). You develop a fine appreciation for VHS tape after seeing it.
Our D5 machine hasn't arrived so I can't tell you what HD looks like through the system.
On the RF side, I've looked at the output of our transmitter up at the factory. I appreciate why a low pass filter is needed. IOTs are amazingly broad and output a family of harmonics that go well beyond 2nd and 3rd. The harmonics are there regardless of whether the modulation is being corrected. Correction applies to the shoulders of the mask. It has been the subject of more sales blather than any topic in recent memory. The bottom line is that the more correction you apply, the more the noise floor will rise in the N+1 and N-1 channels. I heard about that two years ago and now I've seen it.
One benchmark to keep in mind is that you should be able to achieve full output power while using the driver at 50% of capacity. If the driver is pushed to the max, you will need an electronic non-such to pre-distort it.
